The “work triangle” rule in the kitchen: how to arrange appliances for maximum convenience

×

An ergonomic kitchen is not only about style and trends, but above all about comfort in everyday use. That is why interior designers around the world apply the “work triangle” rule. It helps to organize the space between the three main functional areas: storage, preparation, and cooking.

These are the refrigerator (storage), sink (preparation), and stove (cooking). The correct placement of these three points minimizes unnecessary movements and saves time and energy.

Sequence of zones: logic of movement

For right-handed people, the ideal scenario looks like this

Refrigerator → Sink → Stove

This is the natural route for cooking:
• you take food out of the refrigerator;
• wash it in the sink;
• cut it on the countertop between the sink and the stove;
• cook it on the stove.

This sequence allows you to move in a circle, without crossing paths or making unnecessary trips across the kitchen.

Optimal distances

For the triangle rule to work, it is important to maintain the correct distances:
1. The sum of all three sides should be between 4 and 7 meters.
2. The distance between each two points should be 1.2–2.7 meters.

If the appliances are too close together, it will be cramped and difficult to work together. If the points are too far apart, you will quickly tire from constantly moving around.

How to position appliances correctly

1. Sink — the center of activity

This is the busiest spot in the kitchen. The best place for it is between the refrigerator and the stove. This is where most of the food preparation takes place.

2. Stove
• Do not place it close to a window — a draft can extinguish the flame.
• Avoid placing it in the corner.
• Leave at least 40 cm of working surface on both sides.

3. Refrigerator
• The most convenient place is closer to the kitchen entrance.
This will allow you to take food or drinks without crossing the work area.
• Do not place it close to the stove or oven. The minimum distance is 15–20 cm, or use a thermal insulation panel.

4. Dishwasher

It should be as close as possible to the sink — no more than 1–1.5 meters away. This simplifies connection to utilities and makes loading dishes much more convenient.

5. Oven and microwave

The modern trend is to place them in a tall “pencil case” at eye level.
The advantages of this solution are:
• ease of use;
• safer for children;
• the space under the hob can be used for drawers for dishes.

6. Work surface — the key area

The most important area of the kitchen is located between the sink and the stove.

Its length should be at least 60–90 cm — this is the main area for cutting, mixing, and preparing ingredients.

The more spacious it is, the more comfortable it is to work.

The “work triangle” rule is not a strict design limitation, but a proven tool for creating a comfortable kitchen. Regardless of whether you have a linear layout, a corner kitchen, a U-shape, or an island, the correct logic of appliance placement will make the space functional and well-thought-out.
